L’objectif principal de l’espéranto est de servir de langue auxiliaire commune, afin de faciliter une communication internationale plus efficace et plus équitable. Le mouvement espérantophone soutient également la diversité linguistique, la démocratie, et une culture mondiale pour la paix.
L’espéranto est une langue régulière relativement facile à apprendre, utilisée entre autre pour des voyages, correspondances, échanges culturels, et l’enseignement des langues. On estime qu’il y a plus d’un million de locuteurs de cette langue, dans environ 120 pays.
